JAMMU, May 7: Anguished over the non redressal of their genuine demand in favour of setting up special polling booths in Jammu to facilitate polling for Ladakhi students studying in Jammu, large number of students staged protest demonstration here under the banner of All Ladakh Students Joint Action Committee (ALSJAC).
Holding voter identity cards, the students hailing from Ladakh assembled at Kargil House under the banner of ALSJAC and raised slogans in favour of their demands.
They condemned the 16 Lok Sabha elections and said that Election Commission has failed to provide any mechanism for 90 per cent of Ladakhi students who are studying outside Ladakh.
The protesters also said it was irony of the largest democracy that the Indian Constitution does not provide any mechanism to cast vote for compelled migrated students of Ladakh in particular and whole of students community of India in general.
They added that their genuine demand of setting up polling booths in Jammu to facilitate polling of Ladakhi students was denied.
Since the beginning of first phase of polling the Ladakhi students studying in Jammu had started campaigning in support of their demand of setting up polling booths in Jammu as they were not in a position to visit their native places to exercise their franchise, the protesters said.
The students association had also submitted their memorandums to the Election Commission of India and Chief Electoral Officer, Jammu to consider their genuine demand but nothing was done in this regard, they added.
The agitating students said that this election is not 100 per cent as 90 per cent of students (around 15,000 students) from Ladakh constituency were denied the fundamental right to vote.
