Srinagar, Nov 14: In response to the escalating prevalence of diabetes in Kashmir, Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) celebrated World Diabetes Day in order to raise awareness of this chronic, debilitating and costly disease among children, adults and seniors.
To mark the event, the historical monument Ghanta Ghar, Lal Chowk was illuminated in blue (the colour of the diabetes circle). Free diabetes tests were conducted by the department and pamphlets were distribution among people on diabetes care.
Around 100 people were screened on the occasion in which some 20 were diagnosed as diabetic positive. The theme for World Diabetes Day from 2009-2013 is Diabetes Education and Prevention.
The event was inaugurated by District Development Commissioner, Srinagar Farooq Ahmed Shah whereas SSP Srinagar Ashiq Bukhari, Naveed Peerzada(KPS) and Ghulam Jeelani Wani (KPS) graced the occasion.
The event was attended by Deputy Directors, State Surveillance Officer, State Tuberculosis Officer, Medical Superintendents and other medical professionals from DHSK.
