Lalitgate rocks Lok Sabha ; House adjourned for an hour

NEW DELHI:The deadlock over the issue of corruption and Lalitgate continued on the second day of the monsoon session today with the unrelenting opposition in the Lok Sabha protesting strongly the government’s attitude, wearing black ribbons, waving placards, trooping into the Well and forcing adjournment for almost an hour.
Soon after mourning the death of a large number of people in calamities across the country besides the recent cruise ship tragedy in China and condemning terror attacks in Manipur, the Afghan Parliament complex, France and Kuwait, Congress leader Malikarjun Kharge and several others tried to raise the issue through notices for adjournment of Question Hour. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected their demand for the suspension of the scheduled proceeding to take up their issue. Upset over the Chair’s ruling, the opposition Members, waving placards and many of them with black ribbons on their arms, walked into the Well and raised slogans.
Ms Mahajan tried to pacify the Members and pleaded for allowing Question Hour proceeding that went in vain and the Chair was forced to adjourn the House till 1200 hrs. Meanwhile, Members from Telangana also showed placards to raise the demand of a separate high court for their newly created state. The Speaker was unhappy with the Members’ waving placards and tying black ribbons around their arms saying this was against the norms and decorum of the House. Meanwhile, Congress leaders Prof Rajiv Gowda and Pramod Tiwari while talking to reporters outside Parliament reiterated that their party would not allow the House to function till the government conceded to the demand of resignation or sacking of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ms Vasundhara Raje and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chohan for alleged ‘Lalitgate’ and Vyapam scam repectively.
Yesterday too, the controversies over the alleged scam marred the House in the Rajya Sabha for entire day. (AGENCIES)
