JAMMU, Mar 21: On the occasion of International Day of Forests, Panchayat Latti-A of district Udhampur was declared as Green Pachayat along with Panchayat Palmar in Kishtwar district.
A function was organized at DFO Complex Udhampur to mark International Day of Forests, where DDC Chairman Lal Chand and Municipal Council, Chairman Dr Yogeshwar Dutt Gupta recognized the outstanding contributions of Gram Panchayat Latti-A Sarpanch, Kasturi Lal Gupta. Educational Institution Sarswati Vidhya Mandir School, Mand was also felicitated on the occasion for carrying out afforestation and promoting environmental awareness. The Sarpanch of Gram Panchayat Latti-A, K L Gupta was honoured with an award of Rs 20,000 and a certificate.
In a similar function at Kishtwar, Sarpanch of Palmar was honoured with Green Panchyat award. The award was given as recognition of the significant contributions to preserving and promoting the importance of forests and their ecological significance.
DDC Chairman and Chairman MCU emphasized the importance of preserving forests for the survival of human beings and called upon everyone to play their part in promoting sustainable forest management practices.
DFO Udhampur, Rushal Garg, highlighted the diverse forest types of Udhampur. He said the district is home to 42 different forest types, highest in the country which includes alpine, moist temperate, dry temperate, sub-tropical etc. The diverse range of forests provides a unique habitat for various flora and fauna and is an important source of livelihood for many communities in the region.
