JAMMU, June 12: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is set to launch an alternative to polythene bags on June 16, according to Jammu Mayor, Rajinder Sharma.
He made the announcement during a Dogri poetry meeting “Soonkar Tawi Di”, organized by Nami Dogri Sanstha on the concluding day of World Environment Day today.
Highlighting the ongoing efforts of the JMC in promoting cleanliness in Jammu City and preserving the Tawi River, the Jammu Mayor said, “so far, the JMC has reached out to around 9 lakh people, urging them to refrain from using polythene bags. As part of this campaign, the JMC will introduce an alternative to polythene bags on June 16.”
Expressing appreciation for the poets who showcased their concern for the preservation and conservation of the River Tawi through their poems, Sharma emphasized the importance of collective support from the people of Jammu in the JMC’s ongoing campaign to protect the holy river.
He further explained the measures already implemented by the JMC. “A resolution has been passed for the establishment of a Tawi Development Authority, and this year, Saakh Visarjan in the holy river was halted and conducted in the Canal with the cooperation of the people of Jammu,” he said.
Regarding beautification efforts in Jammu City, the Jammu Mayor mentioned the creation of a tree authority responsible for the protection and plantation of trees. He also highlighted the treatment of discharge from city nallahs before it enters the River Tawi, ensuring its usability.
Meanwhile, he expressed his gratitude to all the poets for raising awareness about the River Tawi and appealed to the people of Jammu to support the JMC’s initiative by discouraging the use of polythene bags and instead opting for bags approved by the JMC.
