JAMMU, Mar 5: An amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act was passed in the Legislative Council today.
The Bill No 12 of 2014 regarding amendment to the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 was moved in the Council by Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Ali Mohammad Sagar.
The Bill was passed after a brief discussion. It includes the provisions of 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act that provided Constitutional status to the Panchayati Raj institutions in India.
It provides provision for honorarium to the chairpersons of District Planning and Development Board; chairpersons, vice- chairpersons of Block Development Councils as may be prescribed by the Government from time to time.
The Council also passed 5 other bills earlier passed by Legislative Assembly.
These included a bill moved by the Minister for Finance, on behalf of the Chief Minister, to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, Samvat 2006 (LA Bill No. 2 of 2014 and the Bill moved by the Minister for Forest, Environment & Ecology to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1978 (LA Bill No. 6 of 2014).
The House also passed the Bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Representation of the People Act, 1957 and State Ranbir Penal Code, Samvat 1989 (LA Bill No. 4 of 2014) and the Bill to amend Ranbir Penal Code, Samvat 1989, the Code of Criminal Procedure, Samvat 1989 and the Evidence Act, Samvat 1977 (LA Bill No. 15 of 2013) moved by the Minister for Finance on behalf of Minister for Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs besides a bill moved by the Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Universities Act, 1969 (LA Bill No. 3 of 2014). A Bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Value Added Tax Act, 2005 (LA Bill No. 11 of 2014), moved by Minister for Finance, Abdul Rahim Rather was also passed by the House.
