Leaders across party lines express grief over demise of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, pay homage

JAMMU, Dec 27: Leaders across party lines today expressed their condolences on the sad demise of former Prime Minister of India, Late Dr Manmohan Singh. Remembering his contributions as RBI Governor, Finance Minister and Prime Minister to the Nation, the leaders prayed for peace to the departed soul and expressed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah, in a press conference held at NC Headquarters in Srinagar, expressed grief over the passing away of Dr Manmohan, saying his biggest legacy was that he tried to keep India united and spread love across the nation.” Singh was an excellent economist. His biggest achievement was that he tried to keep India united. He opened the economy. Today, when we talk of a trillion-dollar economy, it is because of Singh,” said National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah while expressing grief over his demise.
Remembering Singh’s efforts for peace and prosperity in J&K, the NC chief said his Government took the biggest step of trying to bring back Kashmiri Pandits and address their difficulties in Jammu. “Over 3,000 Kashmiri Pandits returned here, and their children were provided jobs. Colonies like Jagti were established for them so they could live comfortably until they return to their homes,” he added. Abdullah prayed the God to give strength to Dr Singh’s family — his wife and children — to bear this pain.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and her party paid floral tribute to the former PM at the party headquarters here, where a condolence meeting was also held. Mufti described Singh as the architect of modern India’s economic transformation, recalling his visionary leadership during the liberalisation, privatisation, and globalisation reforms that reshaped India in the early 1990s.
The former J&K Chief Minister said what she liked the most about Singh was that he was a man of few words, but a ‘man of action’. “Singh was very sincere and kind towards J&K, whether we talk about economic packages or political process. He formed five working groups to address the issues. These reports, despite the hostile environment, remain relevant today as guiding documents for finding a constitutional solution to the region’s problems,” she said.
Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Choudhary, has expressed profound grief and sorrow over the demise of former Prime Minister. “Contribution of Manmohan Singh as a leader and economist will remain unparalleled in the annals of history, maintained the Deputy CM.” In his condolence message, Choudhary described Dr Manmohan Singh as an exemplary leader, distinguished economist and visionary statesman whose contributions will be remembered for generations to come.
In a condolence meeting held at Party Headquarters in Jammu, Congress paid rich tribute to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Two minute silence was observed on the occasion to pray for peace to the departed soul and to give strength to his family, relatives and admirers to bear the loss. The meeting remembered Dr Singh for his honesty and excellent economic policies.
While paying floral tribute, Tara Chand (working president, JKPCC) and Raman Bhalla (working president) said that Dr Manmohan Singh during his term as Prime Minister had introduced several schemes and programmes including MGNREGA, Right to Information, Right to Education, Right to Food, Forest Rights Act and Urban Renewal Mission, among others. He was a great asset to the nation and was liked by one and all from different sections and ideologies.
Thakur Balwan Singh, Yogesh Sawhney, Ved Mahajan, Rajnish Sharma, Dr Manohar Lal Sharma, Th Manmohan Singh (DCC president Jammu), Narinder Sharma, Suresh Dogra, Dr R K Khajuria, AP Singh Lucky, Neeraj Gupta, Gurdarshan Singh, Sanjeev Panda and several other prominent Congress leaders attended the condolence meeting.
JKPCC also organized a condolence meeting at Srinagar Party Office. Senior Congress leaders participated in the meeting and expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr Manmohan Singh, describing it a great loss to the Nation and to Congress Party. They remembered contributions of Dr Singh towards India’s economy and growth. The leaders prayed for eternal peace to the departed leader. Those who were present in the meeting included senior leader Surinder Singh, former legislator Abdul Rahim Rather, Nissar Ahmad Mundoo, and DCC presidents Irfan Naqib, and Reyaz Manhas.
President JKPCC, Tariq Hameed Karra expressed deep shock over the sad demise of former PM and said that country has lost a great son, it’s greatest economist, a great statesman, most humble and gentle Prime Minister. In a condolence message, Karra said that Dr Singh has made immense contributions to the country in different capacities especially in the field of economy, as the Finance Minister in a most difficult period and twice as Prime Minister.
JKPCC chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma also conveyed heartfelt condolence to the family on behalf of entire rank and file of the party. He prayed for peace to the departed soul. Sharma said the party has cancelled all sorts of official functions during the period of mourning.
Prof Saifuddin Soz, former Union Minister termed Dr Manmohan Singh’s passing-away a great loss to the Nation. “I sincerely share the bereavement with Madam Gursharan Kaur and the daughters of Dr Manmohan Singh. May his soul rest in peace!,” Soz in a condolence message.
Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Dr Manmohan, terming it a monumental loss to both the Congress party and the nation. Highlighting Dr Singh’s exceptional contributions, Tony lauded him as the architect of modern India’s economic transformation. He stated that Dr Manmohan Singh will forever be remembered as a visionary leader whose wisdom, humility, and contributions profoundly shaped India’s socio-economic and political landscape.
Uday Bhanu Chib, National president of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), paid his heartfelt tribute to the former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, at his residence. During his visit, Uday Chib recalled the immense contributions of Dr Manmohan Singh to the Congress party and the nation. “Dr Singh was not just a leader but a true statesman whose work continues to inspire us,” he added. Chib extended his condolences to Dr Singh’s family.
Senior BJP leader and former deputy CM Kavinder Gupta while extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family said, “Dr Manmohan Singh was a visionary leader, known for his integrity, intellect, and dedication to the nation. His leadership during one of the most critical phases of India’s economic transformation has left an indelible mark on the nation’s progress. As the country’s longest-serving finance Minister, he played a pivotal role in shaping the economic policies that propelled India onto the global stage.”
In his condolence message, senior BJP leader Ajatshatru Singh described Dr Manmohan Singh as a beacon of wisdom and integrity. “Dr Manmohan’s dedication to public service, his economic acumen, and his unwavering commitment to the nation’s progress have left an indelible mark on India’s history. His passing is a profound loss to the country,” he stated and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.
Expressing grief over the passing of Dr Manmohan, Ranvijay Singh, the great-grandson of Maharaja Hari Singh, highlighted the immense contributions of the late leader, stating, “Dr Manmohan Singh was a true statesman whose life was a testament to the principles of service, economic vision, and humanity. His loss is deeply felt by the nation he served with such distinction.”
Apni Party leaders held a condolence meeting at party office in Gandhi Nagar (Jammu) to mourn the demise of former PM. The meeting was presided over by the Party’s Provincial president for Jammu, Manjit Singh, while the prominent party leaders present on the occasion included Aziz Kazmi, Bodh Raj Bhagat, Vaibhav Matoo, Neelam Gupta and Vishal Jotshi. The leaders held special prayers for the eternal peace to the departed soul.
J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu organized a ‘Shradhanjali Samaroh’ in premises of District Court Complex, as well as High Court Janipur, Jammu, to pay homage and rich tribute to Dr Manmohan Singh. The programme was attended by all senior and young lawyers and members of transport union of J&K, Jammu. All the office bearers of J&K High Court Bar Association Jammu including K Nirmal Kotwal (president), Baldev Singh (vice president), Pradeep Majotra (general secretary), Anshu Mahajan (joint secretary) and Rahul Aggarwal (treasurer) paid floral tributes to the former PM and remembered his contributions to the country.
Advocate Nitin Bakshi, ex-president of Young Lawyers’ Association condoled the demise of the former PM and termed him as a statesman per excellence. He remembered Dr Manmohan as a leading economist, who shaped India’s economy during PV Narsimha Rao Government.
Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu (JU), Prof Umesh Rai paid glowing tribute to Dr Manmohan Singh while highlighting his exemplary journey from modest beginning to becoming one of India’s most respected leaders. “Dr Manmohan Singh was a statesman whose vision and wisdom guided India through critical junctures”, the Vice Chancellor said at a condolence meeting held in the Campus. Meanwhile, the Department of Economics also held a condolence meeting in which the faculty members, scholar and students recalled Dr Singh’s contributions to academia and his tenure as an economist.
Dogra Sadar Sabha convened a meeting under the chairmanship of its president Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak (former Minister) to pay rich tribute to the departed noble soul of Dr Manmohan Singh. “Dr Singh’s demise has deeply saddened the nation and especially the Dogras of Jammu as he was instrumental in giving impetus to the struggle of the Sabha in getting Dogri Language included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution,” Charak said. All the Sabha leaders extended their deepest condolences to the family of Lt Dr Manmohan Singh.
Chairman, Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and former Minister Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen has expressed heartfelt condolence on the sad demise of Dr Manmohan Singh. In his condolence message, Hakeem Yaseen while expressing grief and sorrow over the passing away of late leader said that he was a most distinguished leader of the country who sincerely tried for socio- economic welfare of the people of J&K.
NCP leader Rishi Kilam described Dr Manmohan Singh’s demise a significant loss for the nation. Kilam emphasized that Dr Singh will always be remembered as a kind person, a learned economist, and a leader dedicated to reforms. He highlighted Dr Singh’s numerous contributions to the India. He expressed his condolences to Dr Singh’s family and paid tribute to him on behalf of all citizens.
Condoling the demise of Dr Manmohan, All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said that Dr Singh was always concerned about the peace in J&K. Raina said that the former PM will always be remembered for his liberal economic policies that took India out of the morass in the early 1990s. He extended his condolences to the bereaved family. Raina prayed for peace to the departed soul and forbearance to the bereaved family.
Dogra Brahman Pratinidhi Sabha (DBPS) Jammu also paid rich tribute to Dr Manmohan Singh. In a statement issued here today, DBPS president Ved Parkash Sharma mourned the demise of the former PM. “Dr Singh will always be remembered for his visionary thinking and deep insights while always being humble and upholding his personal values. His inspiring leadership earned him respect across the world,” he said.
Jammu Kashmir Sharnarthi Action Committee (JKSAC) in a brief meeting condoled the demise of Dr Manmohan. Gurdev Singh (president, JKSAC) termed the late leader as a great economist of the globe, who brought India out of financial crisis in 1991 and made India self sufficient through many economic schemes. It is all because of his sincere and hard efforts that today India is leading the world in many spheres, he added.
NMC president Subash Shastri mourned the demise of the former PM and said, “Nation lost a great economist. As a Finance Minister and Prime Minister, he made India stand on the world platform in terms of economy. His economic policies were pro employees and constitution of 7th pay commission was the example of that. His contributions to the nation will be remembered for long,” Shastri added.
Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said he was saddened by the passing of former PM, describing him as a statesman committed to harmony. “Saddened by the demise of Dr Manmohan Singh. I recall our meetings, both during his tenure as Prime Minister and before, where his sincerity towards dialogue on Kashmir and fostering people-to-people contact across borders was evident,” the Mirwaiz said in a post on X.
