UDHAMPUR, July 22: Panic gripped densely populated Ward number 20, near Sangoor Chowk Udhampur after sudden leakage of toxic Chlorine gas from a MES water filtration plant in the area was detected, here today.
Police and Fire Brigade teams rushed to the spot and evacuated locals from the area, which has private as well as Government schools, Government offices and large number of residential houses. Click here to watch video
It took more than three hours to plug the leakage even as locals were safely evacuated before the toxic gas could adversely affect health of people or cause any other harm.
According to Police, leakage of Chlorine gas from MES filtration plant was smelled this afternoon around 1 pm following which Police and Fire Brigade were immediately informed.
Acting swiftly, Police team led by SHO Udhampur Raghuvir Singh, Fire Brigade team, SDRF and district administration officers rushed to the spot and hurriedly evacuated schools children and locals from the area for avoiding any untoward incident. After a lot of hectic efforts for around two hours, the area was cleared and school children as well as locals were taken to safer place.
Situation came under control after around four hours and the leakage was plugged. Cause of the gas leakage could not be ascertained while Police have started investigation into the matter.
