JAMMU, Mar 25: An expert lecture on the topic ‘Contemporary Reforms on Teacher Education’ was organized today at MIER College of Education.
The lecture titled ‘Shri H L Gupta Memorial Lecture’ was delivered by Prof SK Panda, former Chairperson, National Council for Teacher Education and presently Professor at IGNOU.
Prof Lokesh Koul, Prof Emeritus and former Dean & Head, PG Department of Education, HP University, Shimla was the guest of honour. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Dr Arun K Gupta, Chairperson, MIER, Dr Renu Gupta, Vice Chairperson, MIER, Dr Adit Gupta, Director, MIER and Prof NR Sharma, Dean Academics.
The function commenced with floral homage to late Shri HL Gupta, the founder of MIER Group of Institutions by the dignitaries.
In his lecture, Prof Panda deliberated comprehensively upon the contemporary reforms in education like: choice based credit system, vocational training and skill development, use of ICT in learning, online learning, evidence-based teaching strategies and ranking of educational institutions.
Prof Panda said these reforms can only yield promising results if teacher education programs implement quality changes in their curriculum by bridging the gap between theory and practice, integrate human values and life skills, incorporate interdisciplinary and multilingual approach and courses like yoga and inclusive education be included.
He reiterated the significance of constructivism in teaching learning to promote activity based learning and also to engage teacher trainees in community work.
In his presidential remarks Prof Lokesh Koul said we as teachers need to dwell upon the ways and means through which teacher education system could be improved. He highlighted the fact that teachers are social engineers who can promote the desired changes in the society.
Prof NR Sharma, Dean Academics, MIER College, said that in order to effectively implement reforms in education, teacher education need to incorporate innovative practices, community-school activities, out-of-box thinking and continuous professional development of teacher educators.
