LEH, Apr 1: Setting an example for others in the mountainous region of Ladakh to follow, District Administration Leh headed by Hill Council Chairman Dr.Sonam Dawa started a campaign by coming to their respective offices on bicycles from today. All the Executive Councilors and officers will come to their respective offices on bicycles every Saturday.
This historic decision was taken on the initiatives of Hill Council Chairman Dr.Sonam Dawa who got inspired by Gyalwang Drukpa Rinpoche’s eco-cycle Yatra from Nepal to Leh, an effort to safeguard environment. District Administration led by Chief Executive Councilor Dr.Sonam Dawa, Deputy Commissioner Prasana Ramaswamy G and SSP Uday Bhaskar participated in a cycle rally which commenced from Taxi stand and culminated at Council Secretariat Office complex to encourage mass participation.
Talking to media persons CEC Dr.Sonam Dawa said that such initiatives will not only safeguard the fragile Ladakh ecology but also to reduce traffic congestion. Starting with government employees from today onwards Dr.Dawa expressed the hopes that it will encourage for mass participants in future. Responding to query he said that he will not take escort while on cycle and appealed media to spread awareness and encourage masses to use cycle. He informed that both DC and SSP are good cyclists which will inspire others.
He said that he got inspired from Gyalwang Drupa Eco-Cycle yatra from Nepal to Leh and he assured Gyalwang Drukpa to start using cycle at least once a week. He also mentioned about making separate cycle trek from Airport to Leh via Skara, Changspa road to encourage more cyclist.
Deputy Commissioner Prasana Ramaswamy G said that such initiatives started with two purpose to reduce traffic congestion and to change the culture of using vehicle for minor issues and to stay healthy and fit physically. He also said that all Government vehicles will be off the road on Saturday except for emergency case.
