Leh shivers at minus 11.2 degree, Srinagar colder than Gulmarg

SRINAGAR :  There was still no respite from the  cold wave conditions in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region,  where Leh at minus 11.2 was the coldest.

   The summer capital, Srinagar, with minus 2.4 degree, second lowest recorded during this winter so far, was colder than Gulmarg, a world famous ski resort where the night temperature  was two degree above normal.

   Cold wave conditions will continue for the next four days, a Met department spokesman said.

   He said the weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours, which could result in drop in night temperature.

   There will be no major change during the next four days, he said, adding that clear sky during the night means further  cold.

   Cold wave conditions become harsher during early morning hours owing to icy cold winds.

  The elderly people and children have been asked to take extra precautions during evening and morning hours and avoid going out  unnecessary.

   The Met spokesman said Leh was coldest in the region with minus

11.2 degree, about a notch less than yesterday. However, the coldest night so far recorded in Leh was on November 16 when it was minus 12 degree.

   However, he said temperature of Kargil in Ladakh region was not available because of communication failure. The temperature of

Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, was also not available.

   Srinagar with minus 2.4 degree minimum temperature was also colder than Gulmarg, a ski resort in north Kashmir where the night temperature was minus 0.4 degree, two notches above normal.

   Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir remained coldest in the valley with minus 3.6 degree, registering a slight drop against yesterday.  This was also about two degree above normal.

   The minimum temperature at Qazigund recorded minus 2 degree, Kupwara minus 2.9 degree and Kokernag 1.2 degree was also below normal, the spokesman said.
