SRINAGAR, Aug 28: Army and Police this evening trapped a militant group belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit in the forest area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
A senior Police officer said that Army’s 52 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 19 Mahar and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off village Banday Bala in Sultanpora area of Chandoosa in Baramulla district this evening after tip off about presence of 5 militants hiding in a house.
As the security forces cordoned off the village Banday Bala, militants hiding in the house fired on the Army party that was laying siege around the house. One Army jawan was injured in the firing. Army also retaliated leading to a brief gun battle but the militants managed to flee from the house towards nearby woods.
Sources said that this group of 5 militants belonging to LeT infiltrated into Kashmir through Boniyar area of Uri sector of Baramulla distict in the last week of June. They were planning to shift to South Kashmir and were waiting for militants who could have arranged for their transportation.
Sources said that the security forces, however, kept them tracking and didn’t allow them to come out of the forest area. However, today when they came out of the forests and took shelter in a house, security forces launched an operation against them.
The cordon and search operation in the area is on and searches will be resumed tomorrow morning. However, sources said that the militants have not gone far away after they fled from the village.
It may be mentioned here that Army has intensified its vigil along the LoC in Kashmir after reports of large number of militants who were waiting on launch pads are desperate to infiltrate before the onset of winter.
Army is conducting massive search operations and patrols in the forest areas near the LoC in Kashmir to trap the infiltrated militants. They have also foiled several attempts of militants to infiltrate into Kashmir.
This year, security forces had major success against militants and they killed 102 of them so far which is highest in recent years.
