Srinagar, Apr 1: A Lashkar-e-Toiba militant was killed in an encounter at Turkwangam area of Southern district of Shopian today while security forces busted a militant module of Jaish-e-Mohammad and arrested three militant associates.

A police official said that based on a specific input generated by police regarding the presence of militants in Turkwangam area of Shopian, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by police along with 44RR and 178 Bn CRPF in the area last evening.
“During the search operation, as the search party proceeded towards the suspected spot, the hiding militant fired indiscriminately upon the search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter,” the official said, adding that “in the ensuing encounter, one militant was killed and his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. He has been identified as Muneeb Ahmad Sheikh son of Shah Mohd Sheikh, resident of Tak Mohalla Shopian, affiliated with LeT.”
As per police records, the killed militant was a categorized militant and part of groups involved in several cases including attacks on police, security forces and civilians.
“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including a Chinese pistol, one magazine and five rounds were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation,” police added.
In the meantime, police busted a militant module of JeM in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district today.
A police spokesman said that Pulwama police along with 55 RR and 182/183 Bns CRPF arrested three militant associates of JeM.
The arrested associates were identified as Owais Altaf, son of Altaf Hussain Ganai of Jandwal, Aqib Manzoor, son of Manzoor Ahmad Mir of Gudoora and Waseem Ahmad Pandit, son of Ghulam Mohammad Pandith of Karimabad Pulwama.
“The trio was working for JeM outfit and were providing logistic and transportations to militants in the district,” he said.
He added that one AK rifle, three magazines, 69 AK rounds and one grenade was recovered on their disclosure.
A case (FIR number 77/2022) was registered in Police Station Pulwama under relevant Sections of law and further investigation taken up.
