‘116 schools shut in Leh, Kargil in two decades’

LEH, Oct 13: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brig (Retired) BD Mishra, conducted a comprehensive review meeting with Departmental Secretaries and Heads of the Departments (HoDs) to assess the progress of ongoing developmental projects and schemes, as well as to address key issues affecting the effective implementation of these initiatives and concerns voiced by the public.
One of the noteworthy topics of discussion revolved around the closure of schools in the Union Territory (UT).
Responding to a query from the LG, Principal Secretary Sanjiv Khirwal and Director of School Education, Tsering Paldan, informed him that over the past two decades, 65 schools in Leh and 51 in Kargil had to be shut due to declining student enrolments.
They elaborated on the status of school property and record custody, now under the purview of Village Education Committees (VECs) and Zonal Education Committees (ZECs), as well as details regarding the teaching and non-teaching staff from these closed institutions.
They also discussed future plans for relocating staff from the closed schools and attaching staff members due to medical or health issues.
The LG emphasized the need for a transparent and impartial process for the transfer and attachment of teaching and non-teaching staff, emphasizing the importance of jurisdiction considerations by the committee overseeing these matters.
The meeting encompassed several other crucial topics, including the disbursement of funds for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) from the Ministry of Education, the transfer of Rehbar-e-Talim teachers who have been promoted to the rank of General Line Teachers, sanitization of mines by the Army in the Dha-Hanua area, issues related to prepaid parking at KBR Airport, progress on the Jal Jeevan Mission, and various other department-specific matters.
Emphasizing the significance of preserving the boundaries of Karakoram/Changthang Wildlife Sanctuaries in Ladakh, the LG underlined the need to consider the future generations and the growth of habitation due to expanding families, alongside opportunities for livelihood. These factors are integral when finalizing maps of wildlife protected areas in Ladakh for the overall benefit of the region’s residents.
The meeting was attended by ADGP Ladakh, Dr SD Singh Jamwal; Principal Secretary, Sanjiv Khirwar; Commissioner Secretary, Padma Angmo, Secretary to the LG, Ravinder Kumar, among other key personnel.
