LG Ladakh inaugurates awareness program on mediation

LEH, Sept 22: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retired), inaugurated a one-day awareness programme on mediation at Arya Nagarjuna Auditorium, Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS), Choglamsar.
The event was attended by Chief Justice of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh, Justice Tashi Rabstan, and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson. Organized by the Mediation & Conciliation Committee of the High Court and the Ladakh Legal Services Authority, the programme aimed to educate public representatives, NGO leaders, civil society members, educationists, panel lawyers, and PLVs on mediation.
The LG emphasized the importance of mediation for fostering peace and empathy in society. He noted that mediation and conciliation have long been part of India’s democratic traditions and praised Justice Rabstan for initiating the programme. He also reiterated his vision of making Ladakh a corruption and delay-free region.
Highlighting the benefits of mediation over litigation, the LG stated that mediation resolves disputes amicably, avoiding high costs, animosity, and long-drawn conflicts. He encouraged advocates and village heads (nambardars) to promote mediation as a cost-effective and peaceful solution to legal disputes.
Justice Tashi Rabstan noted that mediation has been traditionally practiced at various levels in Ladakh and that the programme aims to build on this legacy. He expressed hope that similar awareness programmes could be organized at the block level.
Advocate Tashi Gyalson, while speaking, underscored the potential of Ladakh to become a litigation-free region as more people embrace mediation.
The programme included an overview by resource person Veena Ralli, organizing secretary of the Delhi High Court Mediation and Conciliation Centre (Samadhan), while Rajinder Sapru, Coordinator of the Mediation and Conciliation Centre, welcomed the attendees. Spalzes Angmo, Member Secretary of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority, delivered the vote of thanks.
Other notable attendees included Executive Councillor Stanzin Chosphel, LAHDC Leh councillors, Advisor to LG Dr Pawan Kotwal, ADGP Ladakh Dr SD Singh Jamwal, Principal Secretary to the Chief Justice Mohinder Kumar Sharma, Principal District & Sessions Judge Leh Manoj Parihar, DC Leh Santosh Sukhadeve, resource person JP Singh, along with representatives of religious organizations.
