SRINAGAR, Oct 16: Minister for Tourism & Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora has said that Government was making constant efforts to promote heritage tourism in the State which has huge potential. Moving a step forward in this direction, the Government has decided to revive the Leisure Light & Sound shows at selected tourist resorts.
Chairing a high-level meeting of officers which was convened here to review the progress of these projects, the Minister impressed upon the concerned officers to speed up the process of launching these shows. He gave target for commissioning these projects at Chaar Chinari (Dal Lake) and Shalimar Garden by the end of June, 2013 for which most of the formalities have already been completed. He also directed for expediting other projects at Leh, Katra and Jammu.
The Minister also directed for identifying other potential areas to promote these activities to attract more tourists in the State. He stressed the need for creating infrastructure as per the taste of the tourists with focus on the heritage and cultural activities of the State. He said these activities existed prior to militancy and tourists from across the globe used to enjoy these shows as a part of amusement. The time is ripe for restarting these activities in the State, Mr. Jora maintained.
It may be mentioned here that the Coalition Government was working on the ideas of exploring possibilities to promote tourism in different forms to attract large number of tourists with the contemporary times. The State Government approached the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) for helping in reviving these traditional activities. The ITDC was kind enough and agreed to provide necessary funds and expertise to revive these projects. With the launching of these projects, the tourist activities will receive extra boost.
Minister of State for Tourism, Nasir Aslam Wani, Commissioner/Secretary Tourism Atal Dulloo, Managing Director JKTDC Satesh Nehru, Vice Chairman, LAWDA Irfan Yasin, Director Floriculture Sunil Misri and officers of ITDC were present in the meeting.
