Light vehicles to ply from both sides, heavy one way on Kashmir highway

SRINAGAR: Light vehicles will ply from Srinagar and Jammu, while heavy vehicles will continue to operate on alternative days on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.    However, Ladkh highway and historic Mughal road are open for both ways, a traffic police official told  here this morning.
To avoid any traffic jam or accident on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, it has been decided that heavy vehicles will operate on alternative days from summer and winter capitals.      Today, heavy vehicles will ply from Jammu to Kashmir, the official said. He said a large number of trucks and other heavy vehicles carrying essentials, including vegetables for Kashmir, left Jammu this morning.
Light vehicles will ply from both Srinagar and Jammu sides, he said.     The road is still very narrow at some places where two heavy vehicles could not pass at a time, he said, adding that Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was working to repair the damaged portion of the road to allow heavy traffic from both sides.
The highway suffered major damage due to soil erosion and landslides. Besides road was washed away due to heavy snow during winter at several places, forcing authorities to announce one way traffic for more than five months.
Last month, two way traffic for light vehicles was restored on the highway, while heavy vehicles are plying on alternate days from Srinagar and Jammu. (AGENCIES)
