SRINAGAR : Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was resumed only after remaining closed for about three days due to snowfall and landslides.
However, light vehicles will ply from both sides while heavy vehicles, including trucks, carrying essentials, will ply from Jammu to Srinagar today, a traffic police official said this morning.
Traffic on the highway was suspended on January 6 following heavy snowfall at Qazigund, Jawhar tunnel, Banihal, Shaitan Nallah and Patnitop. There were landslides and shooting stones between Ramban and Ramsu, triggered by rains.
There was fresh snowfall and rain on the highway even yesterday also, he said.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, pressed into service sophisticated machines and men and cleared snow and landslides.
There were more than 1,300 vehicles, including those carrying passengers, stranded on both sides of the highway, he said. It was later decided to allow stranded vehicles from Jammu to Srinagar yesterday afternoon, he said, adding that Jammu-bound vehicles, which were stranded, were later allowed to move towards their respective destination till late last night.
Since there was no fresh snowfall or landslides, it was decided to allow light vehicles from both sides. However, to avoid any accident or traffic jam, heavy vehicles, including those carrying essentials for Kashmir valley, were allowed from Jammu this morning. (AGENCIES)
