JAMMU, Feb 1: Police today seized a live grenade from the banks of river Basantar near famous Chichi Mata ji temple in Samba district after a civilian spotted it.
Reports said a civilian spotted a live grenade lying on the banks of Basantar river and informed police. Security forces and police teams rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area, restricted it for civilian movement and seized the live grenade. SHO Samba Inspector Ravinder Parihar also reached the spot.
Police have kept the grenade in its custody for investigations. A Bomb Disposal Squad will defuse it tomorrow.
Reports said that police was trying to ascertain as to whether the grenade belonged to the Army or the militants. The possibility of the grenade having been washed away in the river and reached banks of Basantar is also being investigated.
Police, however, admitted that the grenade was live and capable of causing damage.
