JAMMU, Aug 31:  A major tragedy was averted today when a live mortar shell was detected and defused near a railway bridge in Samba district.
A civilian identified as Pashi Ram noticed a 51 mm mortar shell near the railway over bridge in Nanke Chak area of Samba district, official reports said.
They said that the civilian immediately informed police after noticing the live mortar shell following which the police personnel reached the spot and called a Bomb Disposal Squad, which defused the mortar shell safely at an isolated place.
“A major tragedy was averted as the bomb was lying only few meters away from the railway line in Samba,” reports said, adding that it was being ascertained by local police as to how the mortar shell reached the sensitive location.
