MENDHAR, Feb 3: Live mortar shells fired by Pakistani troops and lying near the houses of villagers residing close to the Line of Control in Mendhar sector, are posing risk to the lives of the people there.
Reports said that the Pakistani troops had fired dozens of mortar shells on the residential areas at Patri village and adjoining hamlets in Mendhar about a week ago. Several live shells are still lying near the houses of the villagers and have not been removed or defused by the Army or the Police authorities so far. Click here to watch video
The villagers are scared as their children and cattle move around in the area. They fear explosion of these live shells any time risking the lives of their children and the cattle, on whom they mainly depend.
These villagers alleged that concerned Army units and even the Police were well aware of the shelling but it did not bother to clear the area after shelling from Pak side stopped. No Army, Police or Civil officer came to the village after the incident of shelling, they said.
The villagers further alleged that when there is shelling from Pak side, they hide themselves inside their houses. There are no bunkers or any safe place to take shelter. They remain confined inside their houses for long. There is even no dispensary or health sub centre in the area.
The locals Mohd Nissar and Mohd Hafiz have urged upon the Governor Satya Pal Malik to intervene into the matter and issues directions in this regard.
SDPO Mendhar, Neeraj Padyar when contacted claimed that he had no knowledge about this issue. He said he came to know about the matter only through media. Neeraj said he would dispatch a police party to the area which will take up the matter with the concerned Army unit for the disposal of these live shells.
