LJP for Const amendment to overturn SC order on AIIMS quota

NEW DELHI: A demand was made in the Rajya Sabha today to go for a Constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court order on quota in AIIMS.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP) also made a strong pitch to replace the Government Order on reservation for SCs/STs through an Act.
The LJP chief also rued that the bill for bringing quota in promotion, though passed by the Rajya Sabha, is pending in Lok Sabha and it needs to be resolved soon.
Members cutting across party lines including a large number of those belonging to Congress associated with the demands.
“The reservation for SC/ST is still implemented through Government Order. We had, under the SC/ST forum, been demanding for long that it should be replaced by an Act. This Government Order should be converted into an Act so that it becomes a part of the 9th Schedule of Constitution. Then nobody will be able to take the issue in courts,” Paswan said.
He said the government should file a review petition against the recent Supreme Court order on quota in AIIMS or else it should bring Constitutional amendment.
The government has already filed a review.
Paswan said reservation for SCs/STs is being blocked in the name of super speciality centres.
He lauded Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam for his remarks favouring reservation in judiciary and demanded that it should be done in the judiciary and private sector as soon as possible. (PTI)
