JAMMU, Oct 7: The three-day event at the Law School, University of Jammu viz., Surana & Surana National Trial Advocacy Moot Court Competition -2018 (India North Rounds) on Criminal Law concluded today with Lloyd Law College, Noida being declared the winner and Symbiosis Law School, Noida, the runner up.
Justice (retd) Permod Kohli, former Chairperson, Central Administrative Tribunal and former Chief Justice, Sikkim High Court and Justice (retd) JP Singh, Member, J&K State Accountability Commission and former Judge, J&K High Court were the judges for the final event. In all 12 teams from North Zone participated in this mega event which is specially designed with an objective to train the students in the area of Trial Advocacy. Surana & Surana International Attorneys are pioneers in organising national & international level moot court competitions in association with Law Schools across the country.
In the Valedictory function, Justice Permod Kohli, former Chairperson, Central Administrative Tribunal was the Chief Guest and Justice JP Singh, Member, J&K State Accountability Commission was the guest of honour and Prof. Manoj Kumar Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu presided over the function.
Jusitce Kohli emphasized on the overall development of law students. He stressed upon the need for holding such moot court competitions at regular intervals so that the students become familiar with the proceedings of the court. He also stressed upon the introduction of practical aspects in the course curriculum and the need of ethics and value in the legal profession. He gave valuable lesson that actions of law students should be such that many other people are inspired by them to join this noble profession as the current ratio for population of lawyers vis- a- vis population is very low compared to developed nations.
Jusitce JP Singh in his address made an analogy of the lawyers and advocates with the social engineers as they have power to save the society from social evils. He emphasized that the law and justice should be made affordable to the common man and there should be all-round development of the personality of a law student.
Prof. Manoj Kumar Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu in his presidential address appreciated the efforts of Law School students in holding this prestigious event and stressed upon the structural changes in the law curriculum to bring out the interdisciplinary aspects into it. He stressed that students should be engaged in the socio-legal survey on topical themes for which appropriate funding shall be made available under RUSA grant. He asked the students to get benefit of free online diploma courses available under Swayam programme of the UGC. Earlier Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Director, Law School delivered the welcome address. The function was attended by eminent advocates, faculty members, students and members of the civil society. Dr. Bindu Sangra, assistant Professor presented the vote of thanks. The function was compeered by Rabyia Snober Gulzar and Siddharth Jamwal.
