LMD books trader for over-charging, slaps notice on another

JAMMU, Jan 28: Acting on the complaints of consumers, a team of the officers of Legal Metrology led by Joint Controller Amar Singh and Deputy Controller (Enforcement), Manoj Prabhakar today conducted detailed inspection of M/s Chaccha Di Hatti at Raj Tilak road and found discrepancies with regard to MRP fixed on the Chinese made shoes and price charged from the consumers.
According to the complainant, he was charged Rs 800 for ladies shoe whereas the MRP written by the manufacturer was very less— Rs 295 inclusive of all taxes. The team on inspection found that the complaint was genuine and asked the trader to produce the purchase bill which the owner could not produce on the spot.
During detailed investigation, it came to fore that all products which comes under the imposition of 13.5% VAT are being billed at lower rate to save tax but the hapless consumers are being fleeced by charging exorbitant rates at the will of the seller. The Inspector LM Pooja Kumari seized all the deceptive Chinese shoes and trader was directed to produce all the bills from the wholesalers so as to ascertain the actual price billed to the retailer.
In another redressal of complaint, the team issued notice to the owner of renowned garment showroom at City Square Mall for adopting restrictive trade practices to fleece the consumers .The trader was issuing Gift Vouchers at the rate of 10 % of the total value of the purchase to the consumers with the restriction that the gift vouchers can be encashed for particular segmented items.
The owner was asked to show-cause why the complaint may not be lodged in the appropriate Court in terms of Section 10(d) of Consumer Protection Act 1987. The team also inspected other items at the premises and found some discrepancies. The deceptive items were seized and case registered under the relevant provisions.
