LMD realizes Rs 20,000 fine from defaulters

JAMMU, Nov 24: A team of officials from Legal Metrology Department Poonch under the supervision of Assistant Controller, Kewal Krishan, conducted surprise raids at various trade establishments of Ajaote, Chakan-da-Bagh, Digwar and adjoining areas of Poonch.
Inspector Legal Metrology, Pritam Singh, booked several traders indulged in several anti-consumer practices like use of un-re-verified Weight and Measure Instruments whereas under rules ivory weighing and measuring machines/instruments require periodic re-verification from the concerned office. He said some traders were also booked for over-charging and delivering lesser quantity of commodity to gullible consumers.
The Assistant Controller compounded several cases on spot and realized a total sum of Rs 15000 as composition money. Besides, the department with the Joint Inspection team of several law enforcement agencies also inspected traders in Poonch city and realized a sum of Rs 5000 as composition money.
The Assistant Controller warned the traders not to indulge in any kind of anti-consumer practices and stressed to use only verified and stamped weighing and measuring instruments and ensure exact quantity of commodity to the consumers.
While referring to the Legal Metrology as front line organization in protecting the rights of the consumer, the officer appealed to the general public to register their genuine complaints, if any, with the office of the Assistant Controller, Poonch. The traders were warned that indulgence in any kind of fraudulent practice will be dealt in a competent court of law under Legal Metrology Rules and Consumer Protection Act.
