CHENANI, Jan 22: In the wake of Supreme Court direction banning sale of liquor along the National and State highways, some liquor shops have been relocated in residential areas thus triggering strong protests by the locals.
Locals of Chenani also held a protest against relocating of a liquor shops from Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to the town, that too near a Shiv temple. The protesting people raised slogans and demanded immediate shifting of the liquor shop from residential area. They alleged that the liquor shop in residential area was a source of nuisance for families living there.
According to Rajesh Gupta, former president of Chenani Beopar Mandal, the people would not allow opening of any wine shop at the tehsil headquarter and the locals were united against this menace irrespective of caste, colour, creed, religion and political affiliation.
“It is quite amazing that after the ban on sale of liquor on highway, liquor vendor were relocating their shops in residential areas without having any NOC,” he said and added that despite the State Government’s clear guidelines that no liquor shop will be opened in residential areas, shops were being shifted in city localities . “We met with SDM Chenani in this regard and if the matter is not redressed, the locals along with women will come on highway to fight decisive agitation against liquor vendors,” he warned.
Meanwhile, in Jammu, a deputation of residents of Greater Kailash called on Speaker Kavinder Gupta and demanded immediate shifting of the wine shop, which has been recently relocated in their locality from the National Highway.
Kavinder Gupta gave a patient hearing to the deputation and rang up Divisional Commissioner Jammu asking the latter to take necessary action on the complaint of people.
