SRINAGAR, Sept 12: A 2-kilometer stretch of Srinagar’s famous Dr. Ali Jan road between Firdous Colony and Syedpora is in poor condition, and residents demand its macadamization.
Commuters said that the dilapidated state of the road leading to SKIMS, the valley’s premier healthcare institute, causes commuting issues for thousands of people on a daily basis. They accused the Government with failing to macadamize this stretch of road.
“The road has been in disarray for quite some time. The road has huge craters, and driving becomes difficult and dangerous when it rains,” Mehraj Ahmed, a commuter, said.
Commuters also complained that the road stretch has been in a deplorable state for a long time, making it a nightmare for patients who travel from all over the valley to SKIMS for treatment.
The crude patchwork used to fill potholes and repair broken stretches do not last even a month because of poor material and a lack of proper supervision. “Vehicles get stuck on it all the time. Potholes exacerbate commuters’ problems. The condition of the patients who are here for treatment deteriorates because of this broken patch of road,” Javeed Ahmad, a local said.
They said while much of this road has recently been macadamized by authorities, they have left this stretch unattended, causing problems for commuters. According to locals, large craters on the road endangers the lives of two-wheelers riders and authorities should take immediate action to restore the damaged road surface, at least temporarily.
Locals claim that concerned authorities have turned a blind eye to the problem and have asked higher-ups to look into it. “We have approached authorities several times, but nothing has changed on the ground,” locals said.
