Lok Sabha adjourned till noon on Lankan Tamils issue

NEW DELHI, Mar 22:  The Lok Sabha was adjourned today till noon as DMK and AIADMK members trooped into the well  protesting against India’s voting at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a ”diluted” US-sponsored  resolution against war crimes in Sri Lanka.

When the House assembled for the day, Speaker Meira Kumar called for questions being asked.

Just then, the DMK and the AIADMK members entered the  well, shouting slogans and carrying placards. Some placards  read that India voting on the final draft was a ”betrayal”  for Tamils.

At Geneva, the government yesterday moved seven amendments  on the resolution, all of which were duly rejected by the US.  In the end, India voted in favour of the final draft resolution  that went through with 25 votes in favour and 13 against.

The UNHRC resolution urged Sri Lanka to carry out a  credible inquiry into the alleged killings and disappearances  during nearly 30-year-long civil war in the island nation  that ended in 2009.

DMK Supremo M Karunanidhi had earlier withdrawn his  19-member support to the UPA government demanding that India take a tougher stand on the resolution.

DMK had wanted an economic embargo against Lanka, an international inquiry on the alleged atrocities committed by the Lankan army against Tamils and that its actions be  declared as “genocide” by international community.

Mr Karunandhi, after voting, said he was not satisfied  with India’s response and his demands were not considered.

After nearly three minutes of the din, Ms Kumar adjourned  the House till Zero Hour.

This is the fourth consecutive day when the DMK and  the AIADMK members have forced an adjournment of the House  on the same issue.
