Lok Sabha considers steps to prevent Ganga from pollution

NEW DELHI, May 17: The Lok Sabha today resumed further discussion on the steps taken by the Government to protect the river Ganga from pollution.
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader Ratna De said there is an urgent need for cleaning of the Ganga river basin on one hand while carring out the beautification of its banks.
She said the beautification would automatically prevent the river from being polluted.
Rajendra Aggarwal (BJP) said if “we failed to protect the holy river Ganga which is the lifeline of our country than it would adversely affect the Indian economy.”
Pradeep Tamta (Congress) said the Centre is not worried that people do not have drinking water or irrigation water but all it is worried about is electricity generation or setting up of power project.
He said the Government is also apathetic towards the people who were displaced because of projects on the banks of the Ganga.
He said it should also be ensured that there are no major power projects in the seismic 5 zone.
He also demanded setting up of an Himalayan Authority for the conservation of the Himalayas.
