JAMMU, Sept 12: Police have arrested one of the longest surviving militant, who was linked to various terror activities including blasts across the country and had well established international connections, in Kishtwar district. The militant was also linked to international don and terror fund raiser Dawood Ibrahim.
The militant hailed from Kashmir and was operating in the entire State co-ordinating activities of the militants not only across India but at the international level for past several years. He was the longest surviving militant operation for last 25 years, police sources said.
Declining to reveal identity of the militant on the ground that his associates were yet to be arrested, sources described the arrested militant as “top most gun’’, who was involved in series of terror activities in various States of the country. He had international connections including with Dawood Ibrahim, whose name figured in “top 20 militants’’ sought by India from Pakistan.
Sources added that the top militant had three to four major hideouts within and outside Jammu and Kashmir, which were being pursued and some of his contacts could be arrested. Help of police force of some of the States has also been sought, they said.
In addition to Dawood, the militant had wider international links in United Jehad Council (UJC) and might have been linked to IC-814 hijacking in 1999 for which India had to release Moulana Masood Azhar, the chief of Jaish-e-Mohammad and two others.
Describing arrest of the militant as ‘prize catch’, sources said a strong network of the militants across country including Jammu and Kashmir and international level was expected to be busted with his arrest.
