Lord Ganesh idol immersion in TN passes off peacefully

CHENNAI, Sep 15 : After week-long celebrations, the immersion of Lord Ganesh idol immersion in various various water bodies passed off peacefully on Sunday.

Police sources said no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state as elaborate  security arrangements were made across the state.

A total of more than one lakh personnel were deployed across the state, including 18,500 personnel in Chennai, where more than 1530 idols in sea at the points identified by the police after taking the idols in a procession from various parts of the city.

At the Marina beach front, where six locations were identified by the police from North Chennai to the ECR on the bach front, the idols were immersed amid tight security.

Giant cranes were installed in all the immersion points to lift the idols of various hues an sizes.

NGOs, divers. fishermen were also drafted into the immersion operations to ensure that there was  no pollution cases were reported.

All the idols were immersed into the sea after removing all the garlands and other ornaments adorned on the idols, to reduce garbage in sea while immersion.

Multiple agencies of police and other departments were involved in the immersion event which started around noun and still continuing.

A police release tonight said a total of 1,277 of the 1,524 idols installed in Chennai city were immersed in sea.

Apart from this, 405 of the 591 idols coming under suburban Tambaram police limits, 196 of  the 366 of the idols in Avadi limits were immersed in sea and other water bodies.

A total of 1,878 idols were taken out in procession and immersed in sea and other water bodies identified by the police.

The process of immersing the remaining idols are on and it was expected to stretch past midnight  as police have installed high mass lights and other equipment for peaceful immersion.  (UNI)
