Lower judiciary is face of Indian judicial system: Lodha

SHIMLA, Sept 8: Supreme Court Judge R M Lodha today said about 90 per cent of litigation in the country is handled by the lower judiciary compared to the higher echelons of judiciary and the reason why peopled repose great faith in it.

Presiding over the two-day conference of the judicial Officers of Himachal Pradesh on the theme of ‘Striving for Excellence in Court Work and Conduct’  at High Court complex here, he appealed to all the judicial officers to be impartial, independent and attain impeccable integrity as these three were the basic qualities of a Judge.

To give justice was not an easy job and the role of lower judiciary was crucial in society. ‘So the role of the judicial officers becomes important to maintain the dignity and integrity of the overall judiciary,’ he  stressed.

While highlighting the importance of office, he said the court was not an office rather it was a temple of justice and a judge was above all. Therefore, judgeship was not an easy job.

Shimla High Court Chief Justice Kurian Joseph, who presided over the conference, said this kind of conference is like a get together which brought the sense of family and helped to have a better outlook.

Justice R B Misra sharing his experiences said he had served in many states but his experience in Himachal Pradesh was unique. The judicial system in the state had achieved excellence in all respects.

Justice Deepak Gupta appealed that ‘we must work hard to achieve the excellence so that about two lakh cases which are pending in 109 courts may be disposed of.’

He also referred to the excellent infrastructure and facilities being provided in the state.
