Lung cancer most common cancer in region, needs to be tackle effectively: Dr Ashutosh

JAMMU, Sept 26: Prominent oncologist, HoD Radiation Thearpy in GMC Jammu and Nodal Officer for Regional Cancer Institute Jammu Dr Ashutosh Gupta today said that lung cancer is the most common form of cancer in Jammu region which needs to be tackled effectively.
“As per the data collected by Hospital based Tumor Registry Project under the aegis of ICMR India, lung cancer is most common cancer among males with 23.8% cases while in females, it is at number four after breast cancer, cervical cancer and ovarian cancer,” Dr Gupta stated and emphasized that the cancer treatment planning should be based on data generated by local experts.
He was speaking during a National CME organized jointly by Regional Cancer Centre and Jammu Oncology Forum, here today. The CME was attended by eminent faculty from AIIMS Delhi, GMC Jammu, ASCOMS (AOI), Narayana Hospital and other leading oncologists of the region. The speakers observed that lung cancer management is totally genetically driven and hence, it is important to identify such genetic markers present in a patient of lung cancer.
Leading surgical oncologist from AIIMS Delhi Dr Sandeep Bhoriwal delivered keynote address on sleeve resection in resectable lung cancers, while stating that this technique will help in adequate resection of the tumor and thereafter quick recovery.
Dr Rajiv Saini, Senior Consultant at Narayana Hospital and Dr Vikas Roshan of ASCOMS said that targeted therapy and immunotherapy are the future of oncology treatment as chemotherapy has toxic side effects.
Dr Arvind Kohli, Consultant Cardio Thoracic Department of GMC Jammu also shared his surgical experience in lung cancer while Dr Puja Vimesh, HoD Cardio-Thoracic Anesthesia spoke about the steps taken in her operation theatres and ICU before and after extensive thoracic surgery for resectable cancer.
Earlier, Dr Paras Khanna conducted proceedings of the function. Dr Rajinder Singh, Gurjit Singh, Dr Kulbhushan Gupta, Dr Ratnakar Sharma, Dr Vishal Tandon, Dr Noor Ali, Dr Ram Kumar Gupta, Dr Sunny Jandial, Dr Sujit Bhat and Dr Jagmohan from GMC Jammu were part of the faculty presentation.
