MA Stadium’s cosmetic renovation

Converting the Maulana Azad (MA) Stadium into a venue suitable for hosting international and IPL cricket matches remains an elusive aspiration, despite a colossal expenditure of Rs 42.17 crore on its renovation. The upgrading endeavour commenced in 2018 under the stewardship of the National Project Construction Corporation (NPCC), and this significant financial commitment was made possible through the PMDP. The exorbitant expenditure of nearly Rs 43 crore, juxtaposed with the stadium’s inability to meet even club-level tournament standards, warrants a thorough investigation. It is perturbing to note that during the renovation process, glaring indications pointed towards cosmetic changes, such as external plastering, rather than a comprehensive structural overhaul. The predicament is further compounded by the disconcerting fact that a delegation from the BCCI conducted a thorough inspection, identifying glaring inadequacies, yet no corrective measures were implemented. Foremost, it is imperative to ascertain the identity and qualifications of the consultant who advised on this project.
Furthermore, an intricate web of questions surrounds the role and complicity of the J&K Sports Council. Adding to the enigma is the fact that a member of the J&K Sports Council’s Governing Body concurrently serves as a representative of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association during the BCCI’s annual general meetings. How could fundamental amenities like enclosed seating, air conditioning, practice pitches, and most crucially, a top-tier central pitch conforming to international standards be overlooked during the renovation? It is an additional disconcerting reality that the officials implicated in overseeing such subpar endeavours continue to be entrusted with significant roles within the administrative hierarchy. A rigorous audit of the work’s quality should be promptly initiated. The cherished aspiration of Jammu City for an international sports stadium has once again been cruelly shattered by these disconcerting disclosures. Yet another opportunity to stimulate economic and tourist activities in the Jammu region has been squandered. Stern action against those responsible for this debacle is imperative.
