UDHAMPUR, July 30: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into death of a person in Police lockup, here today.
Quoting Preliminary investigations, a senior officer told the Excelsior that 35-year-old Daleep Kumar Singh, a resident of Rathian village, was declared dead at hospital shortly after complaining of chest pain inside lockup in Udhampur Police Station where he was lodged following his scuffle at District Hospital Udhampur, late last night.

Death of Daleep Kumar in Police lockup triggered a strong protest by family members and relatives of the deceased who blocked the main Dhar Road for over three hours, demanding an impartial inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death.
According to Police, Daleep along with two others had created a scene at District Hospital Udhampur and allegedly assaulted a patient namely Sharda Devi, estranged wife of the person accompanying him. He was overpowered by security guards posted at the hospital and handed over to the Police while husband of Sharda Devi and another person fled the hospital.
The incident took place around 12’o clock midnight and in the Police lockup, Singh complained of chest pain over two hours later. He was immediately shifted to hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead, officials said.
The news of custodial death triggered strong protest by relatives and villagers of the deceased who blocked main road outside the hospital for more than three hours, this morning.
In the wake of the protest, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur Joginder Singh Jasrotia along with senior Police officers reached the spot and announced magisterial inquiry to ascertain the facts.
The ADC pacified the protesters and announced that strict action would be taken in case anyone was found guilty of negligence. He also requested people knowing about the incident to share their information or material evidence with him so that the inquiry is taken to its logical conclusion.
ADC Jasrotia will head the inquiry and submit the report within 15 days for further action.
