Maha Govt, Mahindra Cero to set up vehicle scrapping facilities

New Delhi, Dec 21: The Government of Maharashtra through its Department of Industries, Energy and Labour has entered into an agreement with Mahindra Cero to set up additional world class vehicle scrapping centres in Maharashtra. Cero, or Mahindra MSTC Recycling Private Ltd, is India’s first Government authorized vehicle recycler.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding signed on Monday in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, Minister, Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the proposed scrappage centres will be equipped for recycling end-of-life 2/ 3- wheelers, passenger and commercial vehicles with a planned capacity of 40,000 vehicles annually, and in accordance with all legal, environmental norms as well as guidelines provided by MoRTH.
Cero will aim to create a network of world-class facilities across Maharashtra for customers to scrap their vehicles in environment friendly manner and avail the benefits on purchase of newer vehicles which will be linked to certificate of deposit to be provided by Cero, according to Sumit Issar, Managing Director of Mahindra Accelo.
From sustainability point of view, through recycling of old vehicle, we aim to reduce India’s dependence on steel scrap imports and conservation of natural resources which go into production of steel, said Issar.
Besides the current recycling centres at Pune, Cero will operate 4 more scrapping facilities in Maharashtra at Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Nashik. Cero is currently present at 11 locations including Greater Noida, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Indore, Hyderabad and Kolkata and is looking to expand its presence pan India.
The Industries, Energy and Labour Department will facilitate the necessary approvals as per the rules and regulations of the state Government and the draft vehicle scrappage policy released by MoRTH. Cero’s recycling centres will provide a hassle-free option for customers to scrap their vehicles with an online registration for an enquiry after which the entire process will be handled by the Cero team.
