24JAMMU, Dec 23: The Jammu Central Mahajan Sabha today celebrated 134th birth anniversary of Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan in a function organized at Sabha Bhawan, Shalamar Road here today.
The function commenced with the chanting of Gayatri Mantra with enthusiasm and offering floral tribute Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan.
Ramesh Chander Gupta, president of the Sabha while speaking on the occasion showered praise on Justice Mahajan for his splendid achievements and his role in bringing reforms in the society. He said that it was the untiring efforts of and hard work which took this person of the community to the highest chair in the Jammu and Kashmir and got the distinction of becoming the first Prime Minister of the Jammu and Kashmir State in 1947. His active role in the accession of J&K State to the Union of India has been widely appreciated.
The president of the Sabha further said that Justice Mahajan was appointed as member of RIN Rehabilitation Boundary Commission. He was a social worker, a noted judicial figure of his times. He is often credited as architect of J&K Princely state’s accession to India. Due to the farsightedness of Justice Mahajan, Gurdaspur is a part of India.
He was third Chief Justice of India in 1954. Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan was the only Judge in the Indian history who became a Prime Minister of J&K. His life will continue to inspire the generations to come, RC Gupta said.
JCCI president Arun Gupta, said that Justice Mahajan had also strong inclination towards education. The then President of India, knowing is ability, designated him as nominee of Executive Council of the University of Delhi and in the absence of VC.
Shiv Partap Gupta, Zonal president, J&K Zone (ABMSS) spoke on some major social welfare steps taken by Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan, particularly for the upliftment of the people of J&K belonging to the poor and down trodden families.
Yash Paul Gupta, Chief Patron and KB Jandial, former bureaucrat also spoke on the occasion. Several other members also spoke on the occasion. They include-Shiv Partap Gupta ( senior vice president), Dr Mohana Lal Gupta (cashier), Subhash Gupta, Surinder Gupta, Balbir Gupta, Atul Gupta, Ramesh Gupta, Dr Bimal Gupta, Dinesh Gupta, Sunita Gupta Arun Khanna and others.
Meanwhile, statues of Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan installed at High Court Chowk, Janipur and Lala Hand Raj Mahajan (Sunder Singh Gurdwara Road), Park, were also garlanded as a mark of respect by the Sabha.
