Mahi dies in borewell

MANESAR (GURGAON), June 24:  Four-year-old Mahi, who had been lifted out after being trapped in a 70-feet-deep borewell for more than 86 hours, was declared dead by hospital authorities today.
A rescue team of Army personnel rushed her to ESI Hospital here where the doctors declared her brought dead.
Mahi, who was trapped in the borewell in Kho village near Manesar since Wednesday night, was lifted out by rescuers this afternoon at around 1335 hrs.
District Magistrate P C Meena announced that the doctors in the hospital confirmed her death due to brutal injuries.
Her father Neeraj had said she was celebrating her fourth birthday and playing with children outside her home near the borewell when she suddenly fell into it at around 2300 hrs.
More than 100 officials from the Army, fire and police departments and locals were involved in drilling a pit parallel to the borewell.
Rescuers made headway last night as they finally pierced a hard rock in their effort to reach the girl.
The hard rock was a major hurdle, which the rescuers had been struggling to break for the last two days, Lt Colonel Ashwani Tyagi, who was heading the operation, said.
The slab was located in the horizontal tunnel between the borewell and the pit dug up to rescue the child.
Emergency health services were put on standby, even as the Army personnel found a way to circumvent the rock that separated her from the parallel tunnel.
Oxygen was being constantly supplied to Mahi since the rescue operation began. (UNI)
