Mahore-Gulabgarh A region neglected by politicians

Babar Ali Chagatta
Mahore-Gulabgarh,probably the most backward tehsil of district Reasi, hardly makes it way for political discussion. Politically it is one of the most inactive regions, elections come and go but people’s lives remain standstill. A drastic change which the people of this region are seeking is yet to arrive. Why it hasn’t arrived? It can be attributed to the failure of our leadership and absence of active role of civil society. Is there any NGO working for the welfare of people?I think no one . Contestants for elections(at all levels) usually come into fray without any vision. They are visionless. The leaders of this region fall in the category of those who ask ‘What can you do for me?’instead of’what can I do for you?’Continuous lagging behind will spoil the young talent of this region. We need visionary leaders, who have the creative plans for each section of this region. Our representatives should be enough capable of making this constituency fully literate, healthy, empowered,  happy and poverty free.
The common people of this region are at receiving end.Majority of them are engaged in subsistence farming. They have never been introduced to the new techniques of farming. It is undeniable that this region has no potential for commercial farming. It has not been approached, kept unreached. Do people know the consequences of smoke arising out from their hearths? Is it not one of the root cause of their ailments? Have they been encouraged for separate kitchens or any other alternatives? Women are the primary victims. Majority of them are suffering from lungs related diseases. Their voice is still waiting to be heard. The concept of women empowerment is beyond the reaches of,even educated females of this region. They are not aware of their rights and the government schemes exclusively launched for them.Domestic violence and women exploitation prevailing in this region has never become the concern of our leaders.
The two important areas which are primarily to be addressed are health and education. It is one of the noticeable facts that here health and sanitation facilities are not appropriate. There is no major  hospital facility in the vicinity.Quacks are the famous here who even don’t know the ABCD of medicines.People have no option, what to do?To reach Jammu by public transport is a sort of myth here and condition of road is same for decades.
Here education is on the back bench. Many students take 2 or 3 years, some even left to attempt, to pass their board examinations. Sorry, they don’t take but its their education which let them to take time. During board examinations, the scene around exam centres is terrible. It seems there is a protest going on. Teachers and parents, both make way to handover answers(teared pages of books) to their candidates. Now you yourself realise that what would be the future of these students.
The Panchayat system hasn’t led to the empowerment of common people but of course it has become the source of earning for ward members up there to the government officials. Only the living standards of Sarpanchs and members has marked the progress.
Why all these issues haven’t been addressed for years?Who is responsible? Of course our leaders, government officials and we.All the people of this region are eagerly waiting for a positive change in their lives. They are ready to choose their representative(MLA) in coming Legislative Assembly election, who is ready to provide good governance to all and making this region prosperous.
At last I would like to request all the contestants from Gulabgarh constituency to go through the book ‘Governance for Growth in India’ by Dr.A.P.J.A bdul Kalam.
