Srinagar, Aug 25 : Security forces today foiled an infiltration bid along Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district and killed three militants who were trying to sneak into the area.
A Srinagar based Defence spokesman that the operation was launched based on specific intelligence from Army Intelligence agencies. The operation was launched by 2-Para, 8 RR of Army and Baramulla Police.
The spokesman said that in the afternoon of August 24, multiple ambushes were laid to trap the infiltrators.
“Intensive electronic surveillance of the suspected area led to detection of the attempt at 0700 hours on August 25,” he said, adding, “(militants) were hoping to use the cover of thick undergrowth, foliage and continuous rain and low clouds to infiltrate,” he said.
He said that the contact with militants was established at about 08.45 am on this side of the LoC, leading to heavy exchange of fire in which the militants were killed.

“Detailed search of the area was concluded at 2 pm (which) yielded dead bodies of three (militants), two AK rifles, one Chinese M-16 rifle along with other war like stores,” he said, adding, “Indian Army’s successful operation has not only led to elimination of three Pakistani militants but has also resulted in thwarting Pakistan’s nefarious design and intent to disrupt peace, prosperity and normalcy in J&K,” he added.
The spokesman said that use of electronic surveillance and intelligence-based operations continue to be “mainstay of IA ops against Pakistan sponsored (militancy) in J&K”.
A police spokesman said that an input was received by the police regarding infiltration of a group of militants through Madiyan Kamalkote area of Uri. “Accordingly the input was shared with sister agencies deployed in Uri sector. Reacting on the input, speculative CASOs were conducted in the said area and multiple ambushes were laid to trap the infiltrators in order to have keen look on the infiltration and forward posts were kept on alert,” he said.
He said that today, a joint operation was launched by Baramulla Police and Army around Madiyan Kamalkote and during the operation suspicious movement was noticed near Bucher Post along LoC.
He said that as the parties approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon the search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter in which three militants were killed.
“Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including 2 AK-47 rifles, 1 chinese rifle M-16 (9mm), 7 AK-47 magazines, 192 rounds of AK-47, 2 M-16 (9mm) magazines, 30 rounds of 9mm, 1 bag with Pakistani marking, 3 ammunition pouches, 4 cigarettes packets, 11 apples and dry fruits etc. have been recovered from the site of encounter,” he said.
In the meantime, two militant associates of LeT were arrested along with arms and ammunition in Pethkoot area of Bandipora district today.
A police spokesperson said that today after receiving a specific information regarding the movement of some militant associates of LeT in the JD of Police Station Pethkoot, Bandipora Police along with 26 Assam Rifles arrested two militant associates of LeT outfit near Lal Qilla Mode in Pethkoot during a joint naka.
The statement said that the arrested LeT associates were travelling in a white Scorpio and during search of the vehicle huge cache of arms and ammunition which includes 3 pistols along with magazines, 24, live 9mm rounds, 5 hand grenades, one blanket, fake police I Card and fake ID Card of Health Department and other daily use items were recovered from their possession.
They have been identified as Mohammad Yousuf Wani of Pethkoot and Manzoor Ahmed Shah of Bagh Bandipora.
“During preliminary investigation it was revealed that they were in touch with some active militants of LeT and the duo was tasked to revive militancy by motivating youth to join militant ranks and spread militancy in the district, besides giving logistic support to militants,” it read.
“Timely action and arrest of these associates averted a major militant activity in the district. In this connection case FIR under relevant Sections has been registered and further investigation taken up,” he said.
