SRINAGAR, June 16: Army today foiled a major infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tanghdar sector of the frontier district of Kupwara by killing four heavily armed militants while one Army jawan also lost his life.
An Army spokesman said that four militants and one Army jawan were killed in the gun battle that followed after Army challenged a group of infiltrators in Tanghdar sector early today.
Sources said that Army troops deployed in the sector noticed the movement of a group of infiltrating militants and challenged them. They said that militants opened fire on the troops and they retaliated during which one Army jawan was critically injured.
The jawan was removed for medical treatment but he succumbed to injuries. He has been identified as Prem Bahadur Reshmi of village Sauni in district Falpa of Nepal.
Army rushed more troops to the area and killed four militants in the operation. Large quantity of arms and ammunition and war like stores were recovered from the killed militants.
The arms and ammunition recovered include four AK 47 rifles, 15 AK magazines, 400 AK ammunition rounds, one UBGL, 7 UBGL rounds, four hand grenades, four R/S Icon, three GPS devices, two matrix sheets, four maps, one compass, one binocular, two mobiles, one wire cutter, one monocular night sight, four rucksacks and three casio wrist watches.
This is the second major operation in last three days in North Kashmir’s Kupwara sector against infiltrating militants.
A soldier and a militant were killed in a fierce gun battle while five soldiers were injured in Machhil sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district yesterday.
The gun battle began two days ago after Army’s 56 RR intercepted a militant group of 7-8 members at Katwara forest area near Z-Gali in Machhil sector. The group is believed to have infiltrated early this week only. The operation against the group is going on after they gave slip to the troops taking advantage of dense forests.
In the meantime, a Special Operation Group (SOG) today raided Government Dental College Srinagar and nabbed two youth and recovered two pistols from them.
Sources said that SOG and Special Investigation Team (SIT) Rajbagh Police Station raided Dental College and overpowered two youth and later whisked them away.
The youth have been identified as Ishfaq Farooq Lone, son of Farooq Ahmad Lone, resident of Indergam Pattan and Bilal Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Hassan Dar, resident of Wussan Pattan.
The family members of the duo have urged the police to allow them to meet with their missing children. They said that missing report of both of them was registered in respective police stations. “We urge police to allow us a meeting with them in custody,” they said.
