JAMMU, Oct 4: An Army Major was killed while a Colonel and two other Army Majors were injured when their BMW car met with an accident on Kot Bhalwal-Gharota-Akhnoor Road during early hours today.
A police officer told the Excelsior that the accident took place at around 3. 15 am when the four Army officers in a private car No.UK06B/9000 were going towards their unit in Akhnoor area. They were not escorted by any security vehicle when the mishap took place. It is believed that they were returning from a late night party.
While one of the officers namely, Maj Ashish Tiwari from Faizabad in UP, was killed on the spot, three other officers received injuries. Two of them survived with minor injuries as the air bags of the vehicle got open with collision. The speeding BMW initially was hit with the electric pole and then against a tree. Maj Ashish had serious head injury.
One of the officers contacted their unit at Thathi near Akhnoor after mishap and some jawans and officers rushed there. They shifted them to Military Hospital, Akhnoor. Maj Ashish was declared as dead there. Maj Mandeep with multiple injuries was later shifted to Military Hospital, Satwari. The other two injured officers are identified as Col B K Jha and Maj Sandeep of Akhnoor based 10 Division.
The Police has registered a case FIR No. 94/ 2017 under Sections 279/337/ 304-A RPC in this connection. It said that Army authorities did not allow questioning to investigating officer from the injured officers on the plea that they were not in position to give any statement.
PRO Defence Jammu, Col N N Joshi, when contacted, claimed that he was not well aware of the incident as he remained busy during the visit of MoS Defence in Northern Command today. “ Since it is police case, the concerned police will be able to give details about the incident,” the Defence PRO maintained.
