SRINAGAR : A major operation has been launched to rescue more than a dozen vehicles, carrying passengers following avalanches at three different places in Kupwara district, which received heavy to very heavy snowfall yesterday.
Official sources said there was two to three feet of fresh snowfall in upper reaches in north Kashmir, including Keran, Karnah, Machil, Neeru and Tangdhar yesterday. They said snowfall triggered three snow avalanches at different places on Kupwara-Tangdhar, a border town, due to which about 16 vehicles, carrying passengers, got stranded.
Since there was very cold, a rescue operation was launched by Army, police, civil administration and locals, they said about 60 people were rescued and taken to safer places. The passengers were later evacuted to a building of Roads and Buildings, they said adding operation to rescue other stranded passengers was going on when the reports last came in.
Efforts are also going on to clear the snow on the road so that vehicles could also be taken to safer places, they said.
This is the third time vehicles got stranded in the area during this winter. (AGENCIES)
