LEH, Apr 3: Member Parliament (MP) from Ladakh region, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, on Monday met Lieutenant Governor Ladakh, Brig (Retd.) BD Mishra, here and requested the latter to ensure that the region remains crime and drug free.
Calling the attention of the LG administration towards a recent rape incident with a young child, the BJP MP submitted a memorandum to the LG Ladakh and requested him to initiate necessary actions to make Ladakh a crime-free society.
He also requested for stringent action against the rape accused to ensure justice for the victim and her family members. Such action, he said, would set an example of the commitment of the Administration to the safety and protection of its citizens and tourists.
He also requested the UT administration of Ladakh to work with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, social organisations, and experts to prepare a concrete policy and action plan to prevent drug abuse among the children and innocents. To make this happen, he proposed community mobilization, family-based prevention programs, drug education and information for parents, drug resistance skills, and the roles of teachers and schools.
Faith-based plans were also suggested by MP Ladakh to prevent drug abuse in Ladakh, where the people are known for their faithfulness and obedience to their respective religions and spiritual masters.
He also urged the authorities to establish a de-addiction center for drug abuse-related persons and a rehabilitation center for destitute persons to provide necessary treatment and support to those who need it the most.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Namgyal said that he has discussed the matters threadbare with the LG Ladakh and offered to work together to make Ladakh a crime-free and drug-free region as aspired by the people of Ladakh.
According to him, the LG Ladakh has assured to look into the matter on a priority basis.
