Man arrested for desecrating holy book

POONCH, Dec 25: Acting swiftly, Police today arrested a person for allegedly desecrating a holy book in Surankote tehsil and pacified the people who were protesting against the sacrilegious act.
The accused, identified as Mohd Bashir Khatak son of Kaku of Morha Bashi in Surankote, is a retired Headmaster and has been running a Madarsa in Surankote.
According to the Police reports, some locals spotted him of setting the pages of holy book on fire following which they thrashed him for the sacrilegious act, last night.
The incident triggered strong resentment among people of majority community in Surankote who took to streets this morning. The shopkeepers also did not open their establishments and tension gripped the town.
However, before the situation could turn serious, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Sajjad Khan, SSP Poonch Shamsheer Hussain, ACR and other officers rushed to the spot. They pacified the agitating people and immediately arrested the accused under Section 295 and 295-A of RPC.
A case in this connection has been registered as Police Station Surankote.
