JAMMU, June 6: People today held a strong protest on Jammu Akhnoor National Highway at Domana after a man was crushed to death by a rashly driven mini-bus near Machine Domana.
According to the reports, the driver of a rashly driven mini-bus this morning lost control and plunged into Ranbir Canal before crushing to death a morning walker at Domana near police naka point. The deceased was identified as Jasbeer Singh (44) son of late Kartar Singh, a resident of Domana. After completing medico-legal formalities, the body of the deceased was handed over to his legal heirs for last rites.
The driver of the mini-bus namely Saurav Kumar Kalsi (21) son of Amarnath, a resident of Raipur-Domana, also received serious injuries in the mishap and was shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu for treatment. There was no passenger inside the mini bus at the time of accident otherwise the loss could have been colossal.
As soon as the news of the mishap spread, all the shopkeepers of Domana market besides neighbors and relatives of the deceased staged a strong protest and blocked the National Highway at Domana for several hours demanding compensation for the family of the deceased besides, proper regulation of traffic on Jammu-Akhnoor road and four-laning of the road.
The protesters were raising slogans against the police as well as Motor Vehicle Department for not taking stringent action against such mini-bus drivers who flouted all traffic rules and drive the vehicles without having any valid driving license.
Due to protest, the vehicular traffic on the busy Jammu-Akhnoor road came to a standstill. Later, police diverted traffic from Jammu-Gharota road.
The senior officers of civil administration as well police including SDM Marh, Avny Lavasa, SP Rural, Arun Gupta, Tehsildar, Jammu North, Javed Iqbal, also reached the spot and pacify the protesting people.
On the assurance of the SDM that adequate compensation to the family of the deceased would be paid from Red Cross, the protesting people dispersed and lifted the blockade.
