NEW DELHI, Feb 15:
Coming to the aid of three siblings who saw their mother being set ablaze by their alcoholic father and left orphaned after her death, a court here has directed Delhi Police to move the Child Welfare Committee(CWC) for their rehabilitation.
Additional Sessions Judge Savita Rao directed the police to take necessary steps to move the CWC for rehabilitation of the three children who were eye-witness to their father pouring kerosene on the their mother and setting her on fire when she refused to give him money to buy liquor.
“SHO concerned is directed to move for rehabilitation of children before CWC, if they have been left orphaned…” the court said asking him to verify if the children have been left orphaned.
The judge passed the order during the trial after the eldest of the three children, all made witness in the case, narrated in the court how his alcoholic father set his mother on fire leading to her death.
The boy was deposing in a case of murder against his father. He told the court that on April 17, 2012, his father Virender asked his ailing mother to part with some money for liquor.
When she refused to do so, Virender beat her up, doused her with Kerosene oil and set her on fire in his and his siblings’ presence, he said.
The victim was rushed to the hospital by neighbours after the children raised an alarm. She died few hours later.
During his deposition, he also told the court that after the incident, he, his minor sister and brother were taken in custody by their paternal uncle, who later turned them out.
He submitted that after the trial of the case started, “their uncle sent his minor brother to Uttarakhand to stay with his incapacitated grandmother whereas his minor sister was turned out of the house.”
The court also noted that the two minor children were not being brought to the court by their uncle and directed the police to ensure their production before it on the next date of hearing.
The ASJ also took note of the boy’s submission that even as he aspires to study further, he is compelled to work in a factory in the absence of any means to maintain himself.
“He wishes to study further if he is provided the facility for the same and the means for his survival,” the ASJ said and directed the SHO to produce him before Committee for rehabilitation. (PTI)
