JAMMU, Jan 2: The Forest team of Purmandal Range, under Samba Forest Division, nabbed a villager smuggling green Khairwood in a car during last mid night.
Official sources said that acting on a specific information, a Forest team led by Range officer Purmandal, Naresh Sharma intercepted a Maruti car bearing registration number JK02AD- 6886 loaded with approximately 5 quintals of refined Khair wood at around 11:45 pm near Central University, at Raya.
The accused driver namely- Shobit Ali, son of Ghulam Qadir, resident of Badori in Bari Brahmana tehsil was arrested on the spot and lodged in Police Station, Vijaypur. The car has also been seized along with Khair wood by the team.
On questioning of the accused smugglers it was learnt that he was carrying this illegal consignment to a Katha factory at Bari Brahmana complex (Lane 4). He revealed that the illegal Khair wood has been extracted from Chirk beat of the Purmandal Range. Prima facie it is found that seized wood will be used for commercial purpose.
The role of Forest Guard concerned is suspicious as the trees have been uprooted in order to vanish the evidence of felled trees. The whole operation was carried out under supervision of DFO Samba Sagar Singh. The further investigation in the matter is under way to track the forward and backward links of smuggling attempt. A case in this connection has been registered. The Khair wood has been confiscated.
