Managing solid waste

Sir,
This is in reference to the recent column by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat titled “Managing solid waste in our towns” (Excelsior Jan 10th 2016). The author has exposed several municipal committees in J&K which use open space and water bodies for dumping the municipal solid waste and garbage. I acknowledge this fact that garbage is illegally dumped near Udhampur and several other towns of our state. The work done by Indian Grameen Services (IGS)  and other organisations for efficiently managing  biodegradable and non bio degradable waste material in some towns of central India is appreciating. J&K Government must involve similar organisations so that they could assist our Town Area Committees and local municipalities during collection and dumping of solid waste. We have to stand up to ensure that our water bodies like Dal Lake , Jehlum , Tawi , Chenab , Wullar lake are no more used for dumping the municipal waste and other kind of trash.
Yours etc….
