SAMBA, Aug 28: Two farmers who were killed in police firing at Vijaypur in 1991 during a demonstration seeking adequate water and electricity supply were remembered in a function organized here.
Former Minister and senior Congress leader Manjit Singh was the chief guest on the occasion, who along with others paid floral tributes to the martyrs.
Speaking on the occasion, the former Minister recalled that Shaheed Puran Singh of village Dadiya and Romesh Lal were protesting with other people against the administration demanding supply of drinking water and electricity.
“During the protest, the police opened fire killing two farmers and wounding 50 others,” he recalled, adding that their sacrifices would be remembered by the people as they were protesting for the cause of people.
Accusing the present administration in Samba, he said, that they should not force the people to come on roads like villagers did in 1991. Instead, they should be provided adequate supply of water and electricity in Vijaypur constituency where the people have been suffering due unscheduled power cuts.
He also highlighted the demand for the one time settlement of the 1947, 1965 and 1971 refugees/displaced persons and urged the Government to provide adequate compensation to the farmers whose residential houses have suffered damage in the recent flash flood due to heavy rains along the International Border (IB) in Ramgarh area of Vijaypur.
